Grand Obama Party
The killing of Osama Bin Laden has generated some of the most bizarre political controversy Americans have seen in years. The strong military in your face is usually expected of Republicans not Democrats. While the questioning of military force has, for the most part, been a hallmark of Democrats.
When President Obama addressed Americans to announce that Osama Bin Laden had been killed, it was celebratory news quickly followed by criticism. Within 24 hours of the news that the most wanted criminal in American History was killed, both sides of the political spectrum began complaining. They began their good guy, bad guy routines. Never mind the economy or gas prices.
Republicans want President George W. Bush to receive credit for the killing of Osama and an apology for the accusations that Advance Interrogation Techniques are torture. The Advance Interrogation Techniques known as “water boarding” which yielded valuable information and intelligence that ultimately assisted our military in killing Osama.
Democrats on the other hand are celebrating the leader of their party who acted like a Protector-in-Chief. They are standing by the premise that they support the military actions being questioned. That entering a sovereign nation in pursue of a wanted criminal without permission and killing bystanders is warranted, and as Attorney General Eric Holder stated, it is an Act of National Self Defense.
Ironically, there seems to be a reversal of political positions on both sides of the political aisle. Republicans should be giving credit to Barack Obama for acting more Republican like, while Democrats should be reviewing the scholarly rule of law. But to credit your great villain or critique your great leader is just not politically acceptable.
President Obama has confused opponents and supporters with his decision to authorize a military invasion of a house in Pakistan. He stands by the killing and injuring of potentially unarmed individuals for whom or what they represent. The ends justify the means according to Obama’s position. Positions like the ones Democrats where complainig about when Bush was doing his job. We have now officially entered the “twilight zone” of American politics.
In the famous words of Rodney King, “can’t we all just get along?”
The answer sadly for American politicians seems to be, No!
